Meetings|

2008

August – Conservation Section/Bat Group
The Junior Section was launched with a Bat Walk in Saumarez Park. The Pipistrelle bats emerged on cue and their echo-location sound was picked up on our bat detectors while we watched them swoop over the playing field and over the trees.

September – Conservation Section/Bat Group

The Section attended a Bat Talk at La Société’s headquarters at Candie given by the Section Secretary.

October – Entomology Section

Dr Charles David led an interested group around Hommet headland on 12th October 2008

Insects found were:
Fire Bug Pyrrhocoris apterus
Grasshopper Chorthippus brunneus
13 Spot Ladybird Hippodamia punctata (this was only second Guernsey record of this ladybird)
Woodlouse Porcellio scaber
Pill Woodlouse Armadillidium vulgare
Red Admiral Butterfly Vanessa atalanta
Large White Butterfly Pieris brassicae
Small White Butterfly Pieris napi
Garden Cross Spider Aranaeus diadematus
wolf spiders
harvestmen
Earwig Forficula auriculata
Sandhoppers Talitrus saltator
Bristle Tail Petrobius maritimus
Hebrew Character Moth Orthosia gothica

You can find a bit about the ladybird here:

November- Astronomy Section

Unfortunately this had to be cancelled when the Observatory roof was found to be leaking and the ceiling was in danger of collapse. The meeting will take place as soon as the roof is repaired.

November- Marine Biology
The juniors were invited at short notice to join a meeting of the Marine Biology Section led by Dr Charles David, at Bordeaux on Sunday 16th November. Charles has put a report of this meeting here.
