History
The History Section of La Société has been established since 1894, firstly as a Folklore Section, then an Antiquarian Section, and finally as the History Section in 1968.
The aims of the Section have always been the same: to make available information on the Bailiwick's history and culture, and to encourage people to take part and discover for themselves the rich history that makes Guernsey and the Bailiwick special.
The Section meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. At the moment the group, for their winter period, are transcribing 18th and 19th century letters (see sample below). The letters are written in English and some in French; all can be very difficult to decipher. Some knowledge of French is an advantage, and great patience is needed as some letters can take three or four sessions to complete.

In the summer months the members take informal historical walks in all parts of the Island. Led by the Secretary, they have been walking the parish boundaries as far as possible. At the same time any historical sites encountered on the way are pointed out and a brief history is given where possible. Anyone wishing to join us are welcome, please contact the Secretary for the starting point of the walk. The group meet during the winter period beginning at 7:30 pm. In the summer the walks start from various places depending on the area chosen, starting at 7:30 pm. They generally take about 2 hours plus, and can be over both easy and rough ground; good walking shoes are a must. For further details please contact the Secretary on telephone 01481 265529. |
