Maps and Prints
View of Castle Cornet with shipping, c.1800, by John Thomas
Serres. £70 (£110 framed).
This, the first ever facsimile publication of this painting, is limited
to 500 numbered copies. It is the same size as the original: 9-3/8 x
26-1/4 inches (23.8 x 66.5 cm). It is hand-printed to order in full colour
on Waterford 300gsrn watercolour paper, 12 x 29 inches, made at Wookey
Hole in Somerset.
J T Serres, born in London, 1759, was the elder son and pupil of Dominic Serres,
and succeeded him in his appointment as marine painter to King George III. In
1793 he was also appointed Marine Draughtsman to the Admiralty. His task was
to sail in naval ships around the coasts, down the western coast of France and
Spain and to the Mediterranean, making drawings and watercolours. His view of
St Peter Port is thought to have been painted during one of these voyages around
1800.
Paintings and drawings by Serres may also be found in the Royal Collection at
Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Windsor Castle, the National Maritime Museum
and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as at Yale.
The print can be seen and purchased at the Headquarters of La Société Guernesiaise,
Candie Gardens, Guernsey.
