Junior
Section is go!
 Saturday
30th August 2008 sees the launch of the Junior Section of La Société Guernesiaise,
with a Bat Walk at Saumarez Park led by Pat Costen, the President and
Bat Group leader. This is timed to coincide with European Bat Weekend.
The objective of this new Section is to introduce junior members to their
island through the disciplines of each of the Sections of La Société Guernesiaise.
About twenty years ago La Société became an affiliated Wildlife
Trust of Great Britain and formed a Watch Group - a junior Wildlife Trust section.
This was very successful but folded when La Société decided, on
financial grounds, to cancel its Trust status.
The Watch Group concentrated mainly on natural history, but the new Junior Section
will cover other subjects as well, such as archaeology, astronomy, history, family
history, geology and geography and climate change. As with any activities involving
children, the organisers will have undergone Enhanced Police Disclosure checks.
The Council of La Société decided that for the first year, the
Junior Section will be open to non-members and parents will be welcome to come
along with their children. Initially all age groups will be invited to come at
the same time to allow the organisers to see uptake and to plan future meetings
to cater for different ages.
Meetings are planned once a month and will be advertised in the Guernsey Press
and on La Société Guernesiaise' web-site: www.societe.org.gg and
by e-mail for those that sign up.
Those interested in the Bat Walk should meet at the car park by the playground
at 7.30. La Société has several bat detectors and these will be
shared among the children. Leaflets about the bats will be distributed.
