Lecture: The open fields of St. Martin's and their disappearance: 1100 to 1800.

With the aid of maps Richard Hocart will explore the medieval open fields of the parish of St. Martins and will trace their gradual replacement by enclosed fields with banks.

March 2012

Surveying techniques for amphibians
Saturday 3rd March
Dr John Wilkinson, the Research and Monitoring Officer for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, is coming over for the first weekend in March to train interested individuals in surveying techniques for local amphibians and reptiles. We will be concentrating on slow worms, common frogs and newts. The training will take place on Saturday, 3 March both at Candie and in the field. If you are interested in being involved please contact Jane Gilmour on 700024.

Botany visit to Mont Varouf School

Herm Chapel

A general meeting, to which all sections are invited, given jointly by Christopher Mauger, who was in charge of the rrecent work to the fabric and who will detail the findings, and Johnn McCormack, who will try to put the Chapel into an island and an international context. 7.30pm at Candie HQ.

The Botany Section will visit L'Ancresse Common looking for sand crocus and cowslips. Meet at Pembroke bus terminus at 2.15pm

John McCormack will lead a visit to some preaching boxes of the early nineteenth century. A look at Torteval Church, La Villiaze Chapel and the Church of St. James-the-Less. Meet at Torteval at 2.30 pm.

Stucco and brick

John McCormack will lead a walk looking at the stucco and brick nineteenth-century facades in St Peter Port, probably targeting Hauteville. Probably meet at the top of Cornet Street, but confirm with the Secretary (mrjam@cwgsy.net or 720303) beforehand.
